Chapter 14

“GREAT,” REBA grumbled. “He’s going to be a pain in the ass about this.”

“About what?” Somehow, James got the feeling his chance meeting with the triplets wasn’t chance at all.

“You, of course,” Ophelia answered.

“Me?”

“Too bad the Orion genes aren’t more prevalent in him.” Farrah shouldered her denim bag. “He’s slipping into Duh mode.”

“Take it easy on him, sis,” Reba scolded. “He’s confused.”

“Yeah, you’re right.” The older sister smiled wanly. “Sorry, James.”

What the hell? He gaped at them. The women burst out laughing.

“You three are in deep shit,” Bret snapped once he got within earshot of their table.

“Oh lighten up.” Reba waved her hand in a piss-off manner. “He found us.”

Bret fixed James with an intense look. “Is that true?”

Someone started the jukebox again. A woman’s voice crooned the words “I fall to pieces….”

James shifted his attention from one sister to the next and then finally settled on Bret. His inner voice shouted something wasn’t right. He’d wanted to find clues about what was going on in Stone Trail and why he’d been marked. It now appeared he was about to be slammed with information he might not want.

“Is it true, James?” Bret asked again.

“Yeah, I came into the bar, couldn’t find a place to sit, and your sisters let me hang with them. What’s the problem?”

“It’s time for you to go,” Bret stated.

“I was just on my way out.”

“Bret, you’re being an ass,” Farrah said, her tone irritable. “He doesn’t know anything.”

“We just shared appetizers and then played darts for a while,” Ophelia supplied.

“Come on.” Bret snared James’s arm and gripped it hard. “I’ll walk you to your truck.”

James jerked out of his grasp. “Dude, knock it off. I can walk out of here on my own.”

He bid the women good night, tossed a fiver on their table, and headed for the door.

Outside, heat lightning still gleamed over the town. Another light mist fell over everything, creating a new batch of steam that rose in white puffs from every hard surface and even the overheated flowerbeds and lawns. The bass from the bar’s music filled the parking lot with muffled thumps.

“Go back to your motel,” said Bret, “and then complete the Addison job as soon as possible. Go back to Roanoke.”

“Bret, knock it off!” Standing by a Sonata, her hands on her hips, Farrah glowered at her brother. “You’re younger than us and have no say in this!”

“Shut up!” Bret snapped. “You’re putting everyone in jeopardy by what you’ve been doing.” He pointed at each sister in turn. “If Dallas finds out, you’ll all be reprimanded, and so will I. His lineage isn’t strong enough to warrant being one of us.”

“We already told you he just showed up,” Reba interjected. “And he told you the same thing.” Anger lurked in her voice. “You’re being unreasonable.”

Somewhere down the street a dog barked. On the opposite end, a horn tooted twice, followed by the sound of sliding, squealing tires as a motorist stopped suddenly.

Slowly, keys in hand, James backed toward his Explorer.
